Aston Villa's summer transfer business has been interesting to say the very least.

The West Midlands club announced the signing of Chelsea legend John Terry quite early on in the window, with the additions of Glenn Whelan and Josh Onomah also making Villa look like a real good bet for promotion from the second tier this term.

Steve Bruce's men have failed to hit the ground running in the league thus far though, after drawing twice, losing twice, and coming out as victors just once this campaign.

There's no doubt that Villa have perhaps the strongest squad in the division, but could they have strengthened even further?

Here, FLW writer George Harbey identifies two players that Steve Bruce really should have looked to sign before the window slammed shut on Thursday night...

Ryan Kent

Liverpool's Ryan Kent is definitely a player that would have suited Villa, with his pace and energy making him a real attacking threat on the flank.

Instead, there were no suitors for the promising starlet in the summer, which then led to him making a Deadline Day loan switch to Bundesliga outfit Freiburg.

The Liverpool winger has spent time away from Anfield on-loan previously, including last season, where he continued his development with Barnsley at Oakwell, where he coped with both the physicality and speed of the Championship well.

Kent then showed during Liverpool’s pre-season that he is developing fast and could be on the verge of a real breakthrough season if given a first-team opportunity away from Anfield.

And although Villa have the likes of Andre Green under their ranks, who showed his importance in Villa’s recent victory over Norwich, Bruce really should have looked to add more of that quality that Kent adds to a squad, before the window slammed shut on Thursday night.

Jota

Jota.
Jota.

It came as a shock to many when the news broke that Brentford's talismanic figure Jota had moved to Birmingham City for a fee of £6million, which really is an absolute steal for Harry Redknapp's men.

The Spaniard has put in several impressive performances for Brentford over the last couple of years, and the thought of him behind Jonathan Kodjia up top would have been a tantalising prospect for Villa fans.

Jota is a player that would have been a perfect fit for Villa, and the fact that he has moved to their bitter rivals in the form of Birmingham City, must be gutting for the Villa Park faithful.

The Verdict:

Although Villa have many playmakers under his ranks, the addition of this duo would have been pivotal for Villa's promotion chances this term.

The addition of Robert Snodgrass will turn out to be a shrewd addition for the Villans, though the signings of Jota and Kent could have been fantastic for Villa.
