With the football season halted, Barry Bannan should have been aware that praising a fellow Championship side may have made a few headlines.

And, that's exactly what happened, with Sheffield Wednesday fans perhaps understandably not too happy that the Scotsman suggested it would be 'perfect' for him to play in a team like Brentford because of their style of play.

With the Owls struggling in the Championship, fans disillusioned with the players, manager and owner and the club seemingly heading nowhere, having an experienced figure talk like this is far from ideal.

Whilst Bannan has since reiterated his love of playing for the Yorkshire side, these comments could also have been seen as a dig at boss Garry Monk and his approach.

However, instead of having a word with the former Aston Villa man or sanctioning him, the Hillsborough chief should take on board what Bannan is saying.

The 30-year-old has been with the club for five years, experiencing the good days under Carlos Carvalhal and he has proven himself to be a top player at this level, even if he has been inconsistent at times.

Yet, with Wednesday struggling, Monk should be focusing on getting the best out of his better players and Bannan certainly falls into that category.

Given his ability on the ball and technique, the left-footer benefits from a team that looks to keep possession and not from the direct methods that Monk has encouraged since he was appointed.

Quiz: Are these 16 Sheffield Wednesday facts true or false?

If that was bringing results, then the boss would be well within his rights to continue with that style but the Owls have been abysmal in the past few months and it has to be a concern.

Therefore, you could argue the enforced break came at the right time and it will have given Monk time to clear his head and try to think of a formula that will get the team back on track.

Big-money signings aren't going to arrive and the ex-Leeds boss has to work with what he's got to turn things around and Bannan has to be pivotal to that.

So, even though he may have angered those connected to the club with his recent comments, the player had a point.

With the current strategy not working, tweaking things and getting the best out of the influential Bannan should be Monk's priority as something needs to change at Sheffield Wednesday.
