Why struggling summer signing could have turned the corner at Birmingham

Birmingham City have endured a very disappointing season on the whole so far and the same can be said for club-record signing Jota.

The Spaniard arrived at St. Andrew’s from Brentford in August and was expected to be the main man for Harry Redknapp’s side that would be challenging for promotion.

As we know, a lot has changed since then.

Whilst Blues are just beginning to show the sort of form many thought this squad would be capable of and are pulling away from the relegation zone, Jota had been struggling.

Steve Cotterill’s side have won four of their last six Championship games but in the first five of those Jota had played a combined total of 52 minutes.

However, he was given a rare start by Cotterill at Hillsborough last week with Jacques Maghoma out injured and responded with two goals in a 3-1 win.

Everyone connected with the club will be hoping it’s the catalyst to kick-start Jota’s career in the West Midlands.

At Brentford he established himself as one of the best players in the league, with superb technique, close control and was lethal in front of goal with his classy left-foot.

Of course, he has had to adapt to a different style of play at Birmingham and there’s no doubt that it hasn’t helped the 26-year old but the contrast in his displays have been baffling.

His brace against the Owls should give him increased confidence and with Maghoma struggling to be fit he could be handed another start.

It hasn’t worked out for the player or the club since he moved for that big fee but there is still time for Jota to be a success at St. Andrew’s and display the undoubted ability we all know he has.

And, what better place to show that than at their bitter rivals this afternoon.
