Whilst few would have predicted Swansea would be leading the way at this stage of the Championship season, the undoubted surprise package so far has been Charlton Athletic.

The League One play-off winners were favourites for relegation after a summer of turmoil that saw the club announce Lee Bowyer had left, before a remarkable u-turn just a day later.

That, combined with several key figures from last season departing, along with the issues that constantly impact the club under the current ownership, meant that many saw a tough year ahead for the Addicks.

Yet, Bowyer continues to do a fantastic job at The Valley and they sit second in the table and are unbeaten.

Given the nature of the Championship, it would be risky to say that they will definitely fall away - even if a top six finish would be an incredible achievement.

The fans won't be getting carried away yet though and they will also recognise that January is going to be a tough month for a club that have shown they can't really compete with many financially at this level.

In fairness, the owner Roland Duchâtelet deserves credit for keeping hold of Lyle Taylor in the summer and you would imagine their resistance will be tested again in the New Year for the striker who is out of contract at the end of the season, along with other integral members in this team if they keep performing.

The club have an element of control over that though, as ultimately they will decide to sell those players if the right offer comes in.

However, two players they don't have that luxury over are midfielder Sam Field and winger Jonathan Leko, who both joined on loan from West Brom on deadline day, with the Baggies having a January recall option in the deals.

Some of their new teammates have understandably attracted more plaudits in the opening month of the season but the impact of the Albion pair cannot be underestimated.

Leko has started the last five games and gives the side a much-needed creative threat with his pace, power and skill on the ball.

Meanwhile, Field had to be patient for his first chance but the 21-year-old has featured in the last three games, including two starts, during which time Charlton have picked up seven points, so he will hope to keep his place moving forward.

If the Addicks remain near the play-off picture by January then West Brom are sure to recall the players to prevent them from contributing for a rival, whilst if they continue to perform, they could be needed to help Slaven Bilic's team.

Either way, Bowyer will have to be prepared for another big challenge when the window opens, although he has shown time and time again since taking over that he can overcome most things thrown at him.
