It's safe to say not many Championship fans gave Bristol City much hope of doing well in this season's division, but after they brushed Barnsley aside 3-1 this weekend, some might be rethinking.

Manager Lee Johnson was under pressure going into the first game of the campaign having struggled to lead his side away from the relegation zone last time out, but his side gave a much more assured performance in-front of their own fans in the first game of the season.

But it was the performance of one man in particular that should give the home faithful a real boost going into a tricky looking campaign, and that was the showing of new striker Famara Diedhiou.

Signed from French outfit Angers, he's somewhat of an unknown prospect here in England and despite only scoring nine goals in 36 appearances last season, he was right amongst the goals on Saturday, scoring on his debut.

But it was everything else he brought to the City team that will please manager Johnson, with his presence really being felt upfront all afternoon.

The Barnsley defenders were struggling to deal with his pace and movement and for the first time since Tammy Abraham left the club, you get the impression Bristol City fans are feeling optimistic about the season ahead.

Granted, it's not going to be an easy campaign but if Diedhiou can start banging in the goals and continue to lead the line like he did on his debut, Bristol won't be worrying about relegation.

If anything, a push for the top half of the table, if not more should certainly be on the agenda.
