Having sold top scorer and key man Gary Madine to Cardiff City on deadline day, many feared League One beckoned for Bolton Wanderers.

Whilst it’s far too soon to dismiss those fears, there were very encouraging signs after the fantastic win against Bristol City in the Trotters first game since losing Madine.

Phil Parkinson’s men overcame high-flying Bristol City in what was a deserved win and it was largely down to one man – Sammy Ameobi.

The 25-year old played in central attacking role in a new 3-5-2 formation that Parkinson adopted to cope without Madine and he flourished.

Ameobi was at the heart of everything good that Bolton did and capped off his fine display with a wonderful goal that secured all three points.

His unpredictability on the ball combined with his power and speed mean he is a nightmare for defenders and he gave the Robins backline a torrid time.

With the ex-Newcastle man it’s about consistency. Many have spoken about his talents over the years but he has failed to produce on a regular basis.

However, this season he has really stepped up and has shown himself to be a very good player at this level.

And, his importance to the Trotters can be highlighted in how they struggle for points without him.

Ameobi has made 19 Championship appearances, with Bolton collecting 24 points in those games, yet without the attacker they have collected just five points from ten games. That says it all and proves how pivotal he will be to their survival push.

There’s still a long way to go and losing Madine’s goals could ultimately send Bolton back to League One.

However, Parkinson will know that as long as Ameobi stays fit then Bolton will have a real chance of extending their stay in the Championship.
