Wolves left it late to make their most significant move of the January transfer window but the signing of Benik Afobe should ensure Nuno Espirito Santo’s side ease to the Championship title.

The on-loan Bournemouth man did endure a tough spell in the Premier League with the Cherries however he is the final missing piece for this excellent Championship side.

Firstly, he is proven at this level. The 24-year old bagged 23 goals in 48 games over two half seasons for Wolves in his previous spell at the club and the side was significantly inferior to the current crop.

If he averaged nearly one in two then, goals will be no problem now with the service he will get in this incredible outfit.

However, perhaps more importantly, he will give Santo’s side a different dimension going forward.

Leo Bonatini has been a revelation since joining from Al-Hilal in the summer but he can be easy to defend against at times as he only wants to play with his back to goal, offering little threat in behind.

And, those limitations may have been found out in recent weeks, with the Brazilian not scoring since December 4 and Wolves scoring once or less in nine of the 13 games since the same date.

Whilst it’s obviously not a major crisis and there’s no doubt Bonatini still has a big role to play, it demonstrates how the defence has been the foundation for the success over recent months.

But, that can change with Afobe.

The DR Congo international has the pace, movement and mobility to offer a major threat in behind and that in turn creates more space for the likes of Diogo Jota, Helder Costa and Ivan Caveleiro.

Opponents will no longer be able to play a higher line or squeeze the play as Afobe will always be on the shoulder. He also provides a constant presence in the box that sometimes is lacking when the ball is out wide.

There’s no doubt that Wolves were hot favourites for promotion without Afobe but his arrival transforms this excellent side going forward.

He will have to be patient to win his place but when he does find his feet in this team then Wolves could hand out some big beatings on their way to the title.
