It was an outstanding season for Barnsley who breezed back into life in the Championship and managed to achieve their goal of staying in the division.
It seemed at times as if the Tykes could make a push for the play-offs, but finished 14th, a fine achievement and a continuation of their upward trajectory ever since Lee Johnson took over last year.
It leaves the club in a tricky position in the transfer window this summer as other clubs eye up their star players.
They’ve already seen Sam Winnall and captain Conor Hourihane pinched off of them in January, and they need replacements this window.
They never really found a proper replacement for Hourihane, and a real statement signing for them this summer should be Stephen Quinn, a forgotten man at Reading.
Quinn is a popular figure at the Berkshire based club but has seriously struggled with injuries this season, starting one game and making an appearance as a substitute in six.
But in times of fitness at Reading, particularly last season, the Ireland international has looked a seriously mean Championship player, and can play a variety of positions, including pretty much anywhere in midfield and was even used as a left back vs Blackburn Rovers by Brian McDermott in 2015.
He doesn’t quite have the eye for goal that Hourihane did but is influential in midfield on his day.
His leadership skills can also fill the void left by Hourihane as he’s been made captain on various occasions.
Quinn is also remembered fondly by both Sheffield United and Hull City fans for his time during the clubs, and is a very strong player at this level.
The consensus is that he’ll be axed by Jaap Stam this summer as he clears out some of the squad that don’t quite fit his system or who are simply out of the picture.
Quinn certainly fits into this category, and Barnsley would do well to take full advantage.
