Regional rivals Birmingham City and Aston Villa are reportedly locked horns in the attempt to acquire promising left-back Amari'i Bell, who is currently plying his trade in the third-tier for Fleetwood Town.

Both clubs could do with reinforcing their back line and, in particular, that position if they want to climb up the table next season, however, it is Steve Bruce who needs to land the player's signature during this summer transfer window.

Villa are probably going to be lacking in the full-back spot as Jordan Amavi looks likely to depart in the coming months and Aly Cissokho has fallen out of favour, subsequently being sent out on loan to Greece.

If Bruce doesn't want to splash the cash to strengthen his defence then Amari'i Bell is the ideal candidate - very similar to Amavi but for percentage of the price tag.

The 23-year-old originally began his career at the Blues, which includes several loan spells at Swindon Town, Mansfield and Gillingham, before making a permanent switch to Fleetwood, where he has flourished.

He assisted in six goals from left-back in 44 League One appearances to lead the Cod Army to a Play-Off semi-final, eventually losing to Bradford City.

Like I said, Bell will thrive at a huge club such as Aston Villa and that is why Steve Bruce needs to acquire the player during this transfer window; it's not a gamble, in my opinion, it would be a excellent piece of business.
