Derby County are keen on signing Wigan winger Gavin Massey, although they will face competition for his signature from local rivals Nottingham Forest.

The 26-year-old has scored five goals in 20 games this season for the Latics, including a brace against Leeds on Good Friday that went a long way to securing Wigan's survival in the Championship.

However, he may be on the move in the summer, with Football Insider revealing that the Rams are ready to move for the ex-Leyton Orient man on a free transfer when his deal is up at the end of the campaign.

And, the chance to move to Pride Park is sure to appeal to Massey, who will not be short of options this summer.

From a football perspective, the winger will be on the lookout for a club where he can play but he will back himself to get in the team under Frank Lampard.

Then, it's about playing at as high a level as possible and Derby clearly have more chance of winning promotion than Wigan.

Massey has been up and down the Football League in his career and the ambition will be playing in the top-flight, so he may have to be selfish and look to get a move that can help him make that next step.

As well as that, it's about finding a club that suits your style of play and there's no doubt that Lampard's approach is ideal for attacking players.

The East Midlands outfit play on the front foot and look to get at the opposition and would benefit from someone like Massey who is direct, quick and a real threat in the final third.

Now that Paul Cook's men have secured their survival in the second-tier, Massey can switch his focus on to his next move and if Derby's interest materialises in a formal offer then it's something he will have to seriously think about.
