Sky Bet Championship club Reading are the latest to begin the hunt for a new manager in the wake of Steve Clarke’s sacking last week following a 1-0 reverse at home to Queens Park Rangers.
The usual media speculation has seen managers from far and wide linked with the vacancy as well as a few who are a little close to home.
The club have been on an worrying slide down the Championship table after a promising start, and the first task for any new manager will be to instil some much needed confidence back into the first-team squad.
Talk in the Football League World office turned towards who our news writers thought should be the next Royals boss and here we give our thoughts on who should get the job:
Ashley Williams: Nigel Pearson is the man the Royals should go for really. He would be a great appointment for the club and has the aggression that Reading really need at present. His Championship record is superb and he is the key reason why Leicester have stepped up their momentum in the calendar year of 2015.
Michael Hasan: Nigel Pearson. He did a terrific job at Leicester and didn’t deserve to be sacked after spectacularly keeping them up in the Premier League last season. He knows the Championship well winning the league with the Foxes and attaining over 100 points. He is experienced and will bring stability after the turbulent last few months of Steve Clarke’s reign.
Charlie Firth: Phil Parkinson for me. Call me a romantic, but this is a match made in heaven. Parkinson is a cult hero at Reading and has proven his worth at third tier level with Bradford City. Though he’s not done anything particularly outstanding with the Bantams, he would provide a love of the club and the passion that we so desperately need at the moment. That said, he’s not my first choice, and if Eamonn Dolan were to make a spectacular recovery from his illness (which we hope he does) I would want him to take charge of first-team affairs.
Andrew Bell: Phil Parkinson. Given some of the negativity around the club at the minute, now may be a good time to bring in someone who was a popular figure with the fans. Not much experience in the Championship but can instill confidence in the players.
Rafie Thompson: Nigel Pearson. Needs to get back into management and would be able to take Reading’s ambitious squad in the right direction. He is obviously a proven manager after his exploits with Leicester. It is time for Reading to challenge at the top again and they should endeavour to attract managers like Pearson to match the ambitions of the squad and board, otherwise they will struggle to keep up.
Lee Clarke: Oscar Garcia. The ex-Brighton boss worked wonders at the club on a relatively small budget and could be a really shrewd appointment at a club that has the luxury of a budget to spend on the squad. Illness cost him the chance of a fair crack of the whip at Watford last season and with those issues firmly behind him, he would no doubt embrace the Reading challenge.
Anthony Yeo: Neil Lennon. I think he would do an excellent job for the Royals, he knows the league, has a proven track record having won titles with Celtic and the club could get him cheap from Bolton because of their current financial situation.
