Lincoln City have been on a bit of a meteoric rise over the past few seasons and have now returned to the third-tier of English football.

After challenging for promotion duirng the 2017/18 campaign in League Two, they broke out of the division at the second time of asking, romping to the title in emphatic style.

The highly-rated Danny Cowley has been strengthening his side ahead of what could be an exciting campaign, adding the likes of Jorge Grant and Jack Payne to his squad.

But what can we expect from the Imps this season?

We caught up with Football League World's Lincoln fan pundit Nathan Loveridge to get the lowdown...

How would you rate your summer transfer window?

"What was really lacking in Lincoln’s title winning campaign last season was midfield creativity and somebody in the illusive number 10role.

"Both Jack Payne and Jorge Grant are well regarded as midfield playmakers. Hopefully this should result in more potent attacks, and hopefully more goals.

"However, we still lack in a few areas. Full-back and Centre-back cover would be very useful in a challenging season, especially considering that our back-line is for the most part ageing. We could also do with more depth up front, with Matt Rhead’s departure leaving us with only two senior strikers."

Who do you think will be your key man this season?

"Jack Payne will be our key man.

Payne will be Lincoln’s no.10, and an incredibly important part of the more on-the-floor, passing style we’ve been transitioning to over the last season or so.

"He was the best player in a very poor Bradford side, and has experience at a Championship and League One level. Hopefully he can not only provide goals on his own, but help link others into play and allow John Akinde to surpass his goals scored from open play last season."

What could potentially be your downfall this season?

"Lack of defensive depth and overall squad numbers.

"Lincoln only have three centre-backs at the club and if one or more of them gets injured we could be in serious trouble.

"In addition, Neal Eardley remains the only Right-Back at the club and the only replacement for Harry Toffolo being Sam Habergham, who has not featured since the 17-18 season."

What would be a successful season for the Imps?

"If we’re outside the relegation zone come May 2020, I would consider that a successful season for Lincoln City.

"This is a league that Lincoln haven’t played in since the last century, and nobody really knows what to expect. It’s not only unknown ground for the management, but for several of the players as well.

"Although some see Lincoln as being able to do something similar to Luton and try and push for play-offs or promotion to the Championship, I personally think this won’t be achievable this season, but who knows what might happen. The difficulty of this league shouldn’t be underestimated, and so establishing ourselves as a League One club should be the main aim and criteria for success this season."
