All three teams which were promoted from League One at the end of the 2018/19 campaign occupy the relegation places at the moment in the Championship.

Here is a look at which of those three teams have the best chance of surviving the drop this season by turning around their current fortunes.

Charlton Athletic

Charlton have been on one of the worst runs of form of any team in the Championship over the last couple of months. Lee Bowyer’s side have lost four of their five games in the league, which has resulted in them falling into the relegation zone.

The good news for Charlton fans is despite that bad sequence of results, they are just two points from safety. If they can stop the rot and start picking up points again, as they did in the opening half of the season, they will have a good chance of surviving.

The Addicks still have games against Hull and Wigan to play and they are directly above them in the table. Those ties are going to prove crucial to their season. The target will be maximum points from those two games, which would be a great return for the south-east London club.

With the likes of Aidan McGeady, Lyle Taylor and Macauley Bonne in their squad, Charlton look a good bet with the bookmakers to stay up if you have an open betting account. Their odds are much bigger than they would have been back in January.

Luton Town

Luton Town were the impressive winners of League One last season. With a new stadium on the horizon in the near future, everyone associated with the Hatters will be desperate to remain in the second flight of English football.

Graeme Jones’ men have had some positive results in their last three games. They defeated Brentford 2-1 at Kenilworth Road, while they were able to pick up draws against Stoke and Wigan. Despite their poor form, Luton remain six points adrift of safety. They are going to need to continue to go on a hot sequence and hope teams above them fail to win games.

Luton have some tough matches still to come, including an away trip to Elland Road to take on Leeds. If they do manage to stay up, it will be a fantastic escape.

Barnsley

Given they are rock bottom in the Championship table, Barnsley are the favourites with the bookmakers to be relegated this season. It has been a difficult season for the Tykes and this gives weight to the argument that the gap between League One and the Championship is as big as it has ever been.

Barnsley have improved since Gerhard Struber took over in November as he has recorded seven wins from 20 games. They had only previously won one match in the Championship before he was handed the reins. The bottom-placed club still have fixtures against Wigan, Luton and Stoke. Those are going to be key matches in their survival bid.

It is going to be a nervous final period for all clubs still in the relegation picture as the financial cost of dropping out of the Championship is monumental, especially given the current climate in football at the moment.
