Derby County head-coach Steve McClaren has revealed that defender Zak Whitbread will start at Blackburn tonight, following Jake Buxton’s suspension.
Buxton received two yellow cards in the East-Midlands Derby at the City Ground on Sunday and this opens the way for Whitbread to take the opportunity to make the position his own.
Whitbread joined the Rams nearly a year ago and has only started six games as the pairing of Richard Keogh and Jake Buxton was unbreakable, but Derby boss McClaren, talking to the Derby Telegraph believes the former Norwich City centre-back deserves his chance.
“Yes, Zak will play, and deserves to play. He has done well when he has come in this season, He has got good experience. We have no problem with Zak going in. You need a squad and players have to be ready to come in and make an impact.”
Striker Leon Best is ineligible to play as he is on-loan from Blackburn Rovers.
Derby travel to Blackburn for a 7.45pm kick off tonight.
