It was certainly a season to remember for Sunderland in the 2013/14 season, as they reached the League Cup final. 

The Black Cats beat the likes of Peterborough United, Southampton, Chelsea on their way to the semi-final of the competition.

They then beat Manchester United in a dramatic penalty-shootout at Old Trafford to book their spot in the League Cup final against Manchester City.

But their memorable cup run came to an end as they were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in a closely-fought battle between the two sides.

Fabio Borini opened the scoring after just ten minutes, but the Premier League giants responded with goals from Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Jesús Navas to lift the trophy.

Mannone left Sunderland in 2017 to join Reading, but has struggled to feature for the Royals in recent years.

He spent last season on loan with MLS side Minnesota United, and had an impressive spell over in the USA before returning to Berkshire.

Mannone has since been loaned out in the January transfer window, and is now playing his football for Danish side Esbjerg.

Bardsley left Sunderland in 2014, and moved to Stoke City. But his three-year spell with the Potters came to an end in 2017.

He has since been playing his football in the Premier League with Burnley, but has struggled for consistent game time in Sean Dyche's side in recent seasons.

Brown's playing days look as though they're over, but he was recently playing competitively with a former Manchester United coach.

He last turned out for René Meulensteen with Indian side Kerarla Blasters, before leaving the club at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Sunderland's captain on the day retired from his playing career in 2019 whilst with Reading.

He has since moved into a coaching role with the Royals, and can regularly been seen adding his input to the Reading first-team on a weekly basis in the Championship.

Alonso's stay with Sunderland was only a relatively brief one, but certainly made a positive impact with the Black Cats in his time with the club.

He moved to Chelsea from Fiorentina in 2016, and has gone on to establish himself in the starting XI on a regular basis under the management of Frank Lampard.

Larsson's six-year spell with Sunderland came to an end in 2017, when he departed in favour of a move to Hull City.

But that spell with the Tigers only lasted one season, and he moved to Swedish side AIK, where he has gone on to make a real impact.

Larsson played a crucial role as AIK won the league title for the 12th time in their history in his first year with the club.

Cattermole only left Sunderland in the summer of 2019 after the Black Cats failed in their bid to win an immediate promotion back into the Championship after a defeat to Charlton Athletic in the League One Play-Off Final.

The experienced midfielder has since moved to Dutch side VVV-Venlo, where he has been regularly featuring for them in the top-flight.

The 31-year-old played his part in Sunderland's memorable cup run in his loan spell at the Stadium of Light before briefly returning to Swansea, where he swiftly moved to Newcastle United.

Ki had previously been playing his football with Newcastle in the Premier League, but the recently club confirmed that the midfielder had left the Magpies by mutual consent during the January transfer window.

He went on to sign for Spanish side RCD Mallorca, where he penned a deal until the end of this year's league campaign.

Johnson's contract with Sunderland was terminated after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl whilst with the club back in 2016.

He was jailed for the offence back in 2016, but has since been released after serving half of his sentence.

Colback certainly hasn't been much of a 'journeyman' since leaving Sunderland in 2014.

The midfielder is now with Newcastle United, and has been with the club since he left their fiercest rivals. Colback has had two separate loan spells with Nottingham Forest, where he made a positive impact at the City Ground with the promotion-chasing Reds in the Championship.

Borini scored Sunderland's opener on the day against Manchester City, but moved back to Italy to further his career since departing the Stadium of Light.

Three years with AC Milan recently came to an end, and he is now playing his football with Italian side Hellas Verona in the top-flight, and will be hoping to make a positive impact as they continue to impress in Serie A.
