Some may find it hard to remember Bolton Wanderers as a Premier League mainstay, with the club staring down the barrel of relegation to League Two this term.

The Trotters enjoyed an 11-year spell in the top-flight from 2001 to 2012, and in 2005 finished as high as sixth thus qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

After a terrible start to the 2011-2012 season, losing 14 of their opening 19 matches, Wanderers were relegated on the final day of the season, finishing just one point behind 17th placed QPR.

Wanderers would be relegated again in 2016 to League One but bounced back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Last season under Phil Parkinson, the Trotters slipped into the third tier once more and with large administrative problems looming over them were docked 12 points before a ball was kicked.

The deduction seemingly has decided Wanderers' fate this season with the club 21 points from League One safety.

Premier League football was only eight years ago at the University of Bolton Stadium and here we remind ourselves of that XI that took to the field against Stoke on 13th May 2012…

Hungarian Adam Bogdan spent eight years at Bolton, making 120 appearances for the Trotters.

The 32-year-old made 20 appearances during the relegation campaign and would remain at the club for a further three seasons following their drop to the second-tier.

In 2015 Bogdan moved to Liverpool and made two appearances for the Reds, whilst having loan spells with Wigan Athletic and Hibs.

It was with the latter that Bogdan joined permanently in November 2019, with his deal being extended in January until the end of the current campaign.

Currently turning out for German side Hertha BSC, Dedryck Boyata had a loan spell at Wanderers from Manchester City over the 2011-2012 season.

The 29-year-old turned out for Manchester City in their 2014 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and would go on to make two appearances for the side in the Premier League before joining Celtic in the summer of 2015.

Boyata made 135 appearances for Celtic and remained at Parkhead until his contract expired in the summer of 2019.

The defender has so far made 21 appearances for Hertha, scoring three goals.

Defender Zat Knight joined Wanderers back in 2009 and would remain at the club until 2014, turning out 191 times for the Trotters.

At the end of the 2013-2014 season, Knight was released by Wanderers and linked up with MLS side Colorado Rapids in October of 2014.

Following a brief stint in the US, Knight returned to England where he signed a short-term deal with Reading, where he made two appearances for the club before leaving in 2015.

American Tim Ream, has featured 34 times for Fulham in the Championship this term, but his first venture into English football was with the Trotters back in 2012.

The central defender only signed Ream in January 2012 and turned out in all 13 of Bolton's final Premier League matches, before succumbing to relegation against Stoke.

The former New York Red Bull's man would go on to make 113 appearances for the club in the Championship before joining Fulham in 2015, where he has remained ever since.

Defender Sam Ricketts joined the Trotters in July 2009 from then fellow Premier League side Hull City and would go on the make 96 appearances for the Lancashire club.

In 2013 he left the club by mutual consent and went on to have spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Swindon Town, and Coventry City.

In 2018 Ricketts became manager of Wrexham but left the club in December of the same year to join League One Shrewsbury Town.

Still at the Shrews, his side currently sit 15th in the League One table after 33 matches.

Chris Eagles turned out 34 times across 38 Premier League matches for Wanderers in their ill-fated season, scoring four goals and chipping in with five assists.

He remained with the club until he was released in 2014, and went on to have spells with a number of clubs such as Blackpool, Charlton Athletic, Accrington, and most recently Oldham Athletic.

Eagles made 18 appearances for the Latics this term but left the club by mutual consent in January 2020 and has yet to find a new club.

Central midfielder Mark Davies turned out 208 times for Wanderers between 2009-2017, scoring 16 goals and managing 20 assists in that time.

Davies made 35 Premier League appearances over the 2011-2012 campaign and scored one of Wanderers' goals in that 2-2 draw with Stoke on the final day of their relegation season.

The 32-year-old made five appearances in the League One 2016-2017 promotion-winning season but was released by the club at the end of his contract that summer.

Nigel Reo-Coker featured in all but one of the Trotters' 38 Premier League games in his only season at the University of Bolton Stadium.

The midfielder was amongst a handful of players to leave the club following their relegation from the Premier League before joining Championship side Ipswich Town.

After only 11 appearances for the Tractor Boys, Reo-Coker left Portman Road in January 2013 and linked up with MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps a month later.

Reo-Coker had spells with Chivas USA and Montreal Impact, before returning to England for a short spell with MK Dons over the 2017-2018 season.

Bulgarian Martin Petrov had a three-season spell with Wanderers after leaving Manchester City in the summer of 2010.

The winger would go on to turn out 86 times for the Trotters turning out 32 times for the club during their ill-fated campaign, scoring four goals and chipping in with seven assists.

The 41-year-old played 13 Championship matches for the club the following season before joining Spanish side Espanyol in the 2013 January window.

After a spell with CSKA Sofia, Petrov hung up his boots at the end of the 2013-2014 season.

Bolton legend Kevin Davies turned out a whopping 404 times for Wanderers and made 31 appearances for the side over the 2011-2012 season.

The 42-year-old scored Bolton's second goal of that afternoon, giving Trotters' fans brief hope that they could stay in the division.

Davies scored six goals in 35 Championship appearances the following season, in what would be his last for the club before joining Preston North End at the end of the 2012-2013 campaign.

He featured in Preston's 2015 play-off final win over Swindon Town, before retiring at the end of the campaign.

In 2017, Davies joined Southport as manager but was relieved of his duties in April 2018.

Striker Ivan Klasnic joined Wanderers in 2009 from French side Nantes and would make 94 appearances for Bolton across a three-season stay.

The 40-year-old was Wanderers' top scorer across their relegation campaign scoring eight goals in 29 Premier League matches.

After leaving Wanderers following their relegation, Klasnic would link up with Mainz in the Bundesliga but would only manage three appearances before retirement in 2013.
