Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League in the 2008/09 season, in what turned into a shambolic year of management and poor ownership.

Newcastle had six different managers in the season they were relegated none of whom saved them from relegation, not even legend Alan Shearer.

Newcastle were strong favourites to make an instant return under Chris Hughton and spent modest amounts in the transfer window on the likes of Wayne Routledge and Mike Williamson, whilst Hughton also cleared the squad of deadwood raising nearly £30 million.

Under Hughton they barely slipped up as they romped to the Championship title confirming their promotion by Easter scoring a huge 102 points.

Newcastle lost just 4 times all season and were unbeaten at St James' Park scoring a division high 90 goals and conceding a division low 35 goals.

Key players such as Kevin Nolan and Peter Lovenkrands were essential to their promotion and now we look at where that XI has ended up.

Will Newcastle's current team surpass the 102 point record set by this XI?

GK - Steve Harper

Sunderland are eyeing a surprise move for Steve Harper

Harper devoted 20 years of his career to Newcastle since coming through their youth academy, and was an incredibly key figure in their promotion playing 45 times.

He made 199 appearances in all struggling to become there Premier League Number 1 often finding himself behind Tim Krul of Shay Given depending on the era.

After finally leaving Newcastle in 2013 he played for Hull in the Premier League, playing 31 times over the next 2 years before retirement.

He is now the academy goalkeeper coach at Newcastle.

LB - Jose Enrique

Enrique was a vital player for Newcastle at left back in there promotion winning campaign being a part of the best defensive unit in the Championship.

Enrique played a total of 35 times and looked solid defensively as well as a decent attacking outlet.

After Newcastle won promotion he secured a move to English giants Liverpool and was a regular for the next couple of season's making over 100 appearances.

He soon became a fringe player and hasn't played much football in recent years, before signing for Spanish Segunda side Real Zaragoza this season.

RB - Danny Simpson

simpson333

Simpson was a modest purchase for under £1 million from Manchester United and he managed to nail down the right back spot despite some very experienced competition.

Simpson played 40 times that season impressing fans with his pace.

Simpson went on to play over 100 Premier League games for the Toon before a move to QPR and then to Premier League champions Leicester, a feat in which Simpson played a big part. A big success story of the side.

CB - Fabricio Coloccini

Fabricio Coloccini

The Argentine centre back was a big figure for Newcastle in the 09/10 season forming the division's best defensive partnership.

Coloccini was brilliant for Newcastle making the Team of the Year and went on to make nearly 300 appearances for Newcastle mostly in the Premier League and even made the Team of the Year in the 11/12 season.

He was released at the end of last season and now plays in his native Argentina with old club San Lorenzo.

CB - Steven Taylor

There was a real fight for the starting spot next to Coloccini being fought for by Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson.

Taylor though made 21 appearances and is well adorned by the Newcastle fans for his passion.

He is a local lad who has spent 13 years at the club and has made well over 200 appearances for the club.

Taylor now plays in America for the Portland Timbers.

CM - Danny Guthrie

Guthrie perhaps was one of the most important components in the Newcastle side, and was able to form an excellent partnership with Kevin Nolan and also kept Joey Barton out of the team.

Guthrie made nearly 40 appearances for the club impressing fans with his tough tackling and passing.

After winning promotion he spent 2 more seasons in the Premier League for Newcastle but didn't play regularly.

He then left for Premier League Reading who were relegated in his first season and now plays for Championship strugglers Blackburn.

CM - Kevin Nolan

nolan88

By far the best player for Newcastle and the best player in the division at the time was legend Kevin Nolan.

Nolan played nearly every game scoring 17 goals making him the side's top scorer and most influential attacking talent.

He made the Team of the Year before going on to play 30 more Premier League games for Newcastle scoring an impressive 12 goals.

He then joined West Ham where his 12 goals helped them win promotion and he made Team of the Year again.

He continued to be influential for the Hammers before leaving in 2015, after falling out of the first team and he retired after a stint at Leyton Orient where he was player-manager.

LM - Peter Lovenkrands

Birmingham City v Stoke City - Capital One Cup Fourth Round

At first Lovenkrands wasn't a regular starter but when Hughton gave him a chance he took it with both hands becoming one of Newcastle's best players.

The year before, the Dane had impressed in his short Premier League stint with Newcastle and in the Championship he bagged 13 goals in 29 games.

He became a peripheral figure for the side in the Premier League and late joined Championship Birmingham with limited success, and now he's retired.

CAM - Jonas Gutierrez

Adored by fans and neutrals alike Gutierrez played a crucial part in Newcastle's promotion winning season.

He played 37 times scoring 4 times and was a crucial attacking outlet for the strikers and he went on to spend 6 more years at the club.

He was a Premier League regular over the next few season's scoring some vital goals.

Sadly his playing time in the 13/14 season was restricted by testicular cancer devastating the football world but after defeating cancer, and recovering he came back to score a crucial goal that kept Newcastle up.

Sadly he was released much to the disgust of fans and after winning a discrimination lawsuit, he now plays for Defensa Y Justicia in Argentina.

RM - Alan Smith

Newcastle had a number of options down the right hand side with Wayne Routledge also becoming a key figure but it was the experienced Alan Smith who played most.

Smith who had long stints with Leeds and Manchester United made the move in 2007, and became a regular for the Championship season but his performances were disappointing.

He eventually left for League 1 side MK Dons before later playing for Notts County.

ST - Andy Carroll

West Ham United's Andy Carroll before the match

One of the big success stories of all this is Andy Carroll who after scoring a crucial 17 goals to earn the side promotion and making the Team of the Year, he made a big Premier League impact.

He scored 11 goals in 19 games causing Liverpool to pay a stunning £30 million but he ended up flopping scoring just 6 goals in 44 games.

He has enjoyed more success with West Ham where injury problems have restricted him but 23 goals in 81 games is a decent return.

He has also made an impact for England earning his call-up and scored against Sweden at Euro 2012.

Manager - Chris Hughton

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton

After leading Newcastle to promotion he was sacked the following season after a poor start to the anger of fans.

He then came incredibly close to leading Birmingham to promotion before becoming manager of Norwich.

He secured Norwich's Premier League status for a couple of seasons before being sacked and becoming manager of Brighton in 2014, where he remains now.
