For Millwall to reach the FA Cup Final back in 2004 at the Millennium Stadium was regarded as one the biggest achievements in the club’s history.

Although they were comfortably defeated 3-0 by an extremely talented Manchester United side that featured Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud Van Nistelooy, the East London club were the first team from outside the top flight to reach the FA Cup final since Sunderland in 1992.

Since then, the likes of Cardiff City and Bradford City have competed in the FA Cup and League Cup final in recent years, but have failed at the last final hurdle.

Although Championship-bound Wigan Athletic pulled off one of the shock defeats of an FA Cup final defeating one of the best sides in Europe in Manchester City.

Millwall came so close to returning to the Championship in May this year after a single season in League One, but were beaten by Barnsley at Wembley Stadium.

That defeat seems to have knocked their confidence so far in the current campaign as they lie in mid-table.

For all you Millwall fans curious to where that FA Cup final team are playing at the moment, FLW writer Ashley Williams researches where they are playing their football these days…...

GK – Andy Marshall

Marshall was on loan from Ipswich Town when he competed in the FA Cup Final, but retired two years ago at the age of 39 to pursue a career as a goalkeeping coach at his former club Aston Villa.

He also took over as caretaker manager for the Midlands outfit in February 2015 when Paul Lambert was sacked and managed just once for the Villains in a FA Cup victory against Leicester City.

LB – Robbie Ryan

The Irish left-back has also retired and was last known to be playing for Croydon Athletic.

Ryan was given the daunting task of marking Cristiano Ronaldo and his last game in a Millwall shirt was in the FA Cup Final, and he later signed for Bristol Rovers in a three-year deal.

CB – Matthew Lawrence

Lawrence and Ward formed a formidable partnership on the route to the final.

He made 228 appearances during a six year playing career with Millwall and is last known to have played for Burgess Hill Town in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League, the seventh tier of English football two years ago.

CB – Darren Ward

Ward was an instrumental figure for Millwall on their route to the final and still plays for Yeovil Town at 38.

He has appeared in 13 games so far for the Glovers this season – netting two goals and has contributed to his side pushing for a play-off place.

Ward and Matthew Lawrence stood out at the central defensive position, and Ward played the full 90 minutes in 2004.

RB – Marvin Elliot

Elliot was part of Millwall’s academy and made 144 appearances in a five-year stint at the Den before moving to Bristol City.

After a successful first season with Bristol City, Elliott established himself as a popular member of the squad, and was named in the P.F.A Team of the Year alongside team-mate Bradley Orr.

He also won Bristol City's 'Young Player of the Year' award in his first year at the club. He is now playing in League Two for Crawley Town.

RW – Peter Sweeney

The 32-year-old winger is thought to be playing for Greenwich Borough in the Southern Counties East Football League.

Before that he was playing in the Conference with Dartford on a one-year deal but his contract expired at the end of the season.

Sweeney played 34 times for Millwall in 2003–04 and he played a major role in the Lions' route to the 2004 FA Cup Final.

Following the cup final appearance, Sweeney played a part in the first round of the UEFA Cup, where they were defeated by Hungarian side Ferencvárosi.

CM – Dennis Wise

Wise will always be an iconic figure at the Den after taking over in 2002 as the club’s player-manager.

He has retired and has been out of football for a number of years since resigning as the Executive Director of Football at Newcastle United.

He resigned from the Lions the following season as a new regime entered the club.

CM – David Livermore

Livermore is currently the assistant manager at Millwall after leaving Histon to return to the club he joined in 1999 as a youth coach before being promoted to the number two last year.

In a 14-year career, half of that was spent as a player at the Lions making 273 appearances and scoring 12 goals in total.

LW – Phil Ifil

Ifil’s whereabouts are unknown, but he last played for Kettering Town back in 2012 and was on trial with Welsh club Wrexham in 2013.

He played in the cup-final for the Lions on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and was once regarded as one of the next biggest young English talents, but his career never took off.

CAM – Tim Cahill

TIM-CAHILL-1

Cahill will always be a name that will be familiar among the Lions supporters. He was crucial in securing their place in the FA Cup Final- scoring the winning goal against Sunderland in the semi-final.

He was also part of the Millwall side that won the Football League Second Division championship with a club record 93 points in the 2000/01 season.

He also reached two play-off semi-finals with Millwall in 2000/02. He is currently playing in his native country, Australia for Melbourne City and still represents his country at the age of 36.

ST – Neil Harris

Lions legend Neil Harris, the club's all-time top goalscorer, became Millwall manager on a permanent basis in May 2015 after a 10-game spell as interim boss following the departure of Ian Holloway.

He was so close to guiding his club to a return to the Championship last season, but the foundations have been firmly laid that the club can go that one step further and return to the Championship at the end of this season.
