Back in 2001, Ipswich Town did the unthinkable at the time, and finished 5th in the Premier League to secure qualification to the UEFA Cup.

That year, they made it to the third round of Europe's second biggest competition, which included some famous victories which will go down in Ipswich folklore.

They defeated Russian side Torpedo Moscow in round one, before dispatching Helsingborgs with ease in round two to set up a mouth watering clash with Inter Milan.

What followed will go down in history, as Ipswich ran out 1-0 winners at Portman Road in the first leg to send half of East Anglia into raptures. A 4-1 defeat in the second leg at the San Siro put a downer on things, but the team had still made their mark.

They were amazingly relegated that same year, but again qualified for the UEFA Cup through the fair play system.

With these memories in mind, FLW writer Lee Connor takes a trip down memory lane and looks at there the players from that famous Ipswich team are now...

Matteo Sereni

Sereni

The Italian goalkeeper enjoyed a successful spell with the Tractor Boys amidst a career where he bounced between numerous Italian teams.

However, upon retirement, things would take a very dark turn for the stopper.

Sereni was charged with and found guilty of sexual offences against his own daughter, and was subsequently ordered to serve prison time for his crimes in 2015.

Jamie Clapham

Steady Eddie left back Clapham was a mainstay of the Ipswich team for many years.

Mark Venus

Probably one of the most active in this team in terms of current football affairs, Venus is currently caretaker manager of League One outfit Coventry City.

Following retirement in 2004, he has predominantly followed his old pal Tony Mowbray into jobs, working as coach or assistant for him.

His latest caretaker role comes from Mowbray stepping down as the Sky Blues boss in September this year, and Venus may well hope this is his break into management permanently.

Matt Holland

Central midfielder Holland was a top player for Ipswich and Charlton respectively, and represented Ireland with aplomb as well.

He made well in excess of 250 appearances for the Tractor Boys, and was a driving force behind their success for a long time in the late 90's and early 2000's.

Holland has since gone into working for TV since his retirement, and regularly appears on the BBC and Talksport.

Jim Magilton

Magilton enjoyed a stellar career as a player, before spells with Ipswich, QPR, and Melbourne Victory as manager preceeded his subsequent appointment with the Northern Ireland set up.

Finidi George

Nigerian legend Finidi George was loved at Ipswich, and could often do the unpredictable to turn a game on its head.

George was a maverick sort of player, and played with a smile on his face throughout his career.

The winger was last seen back in Dutch football, where he was taking his coaching badges and working with FC Zwolle to gain more experience for his future career.

Jermaine Wright

Versatile midfielder Wright enjoyed a long and successful career in the game, and was a hard working wide man in his prime.

Alun Armstrong

The striker was a steady presence in general during his time with the club, often chipping in with vital goals like the one against Inter.

Armstrong is currently the manager of non-league Blyth as he tries to work his way back up the football pyramid.
