For Birmingham City supporters, a day that will long live in the memory is the 25th August 2011 - the club's first European encounter for almost 50 years.

Thanks to their 2-1 League Cup final success over Arsenal in the previous campaign, the Blues would have European football to look forward to at St Andrews, a feat some supporters thought they'd never see in their lifetime.

And as the two-legged tie against Portuguese side Nacional rolled around, optimism was high that the Blues could upset the odds and make it into the Group Stages of Europe's second-biggest Cup competition.

And after a solid 0-0 away draw in Nacional, attention very much turned to a packed St Andrews, where a win would guarantee progression through to the groups.

It turned out to be one of the most memorable nights some Blues supporters had ever seen in a game the Midlanders won 3-0.

Goals from young Nathan Redmond, David Murphy and Chris Wood gave Birmingham the much-needed win and granted them passage to the next stage.

And in this article, we want to take a look at what the players who started that game are up to now.

So with that in mind, here's our rundown of Birmingham City's Europa League squad of 2011 and where they are now...

GK: Boaz Myhill

Now 34-years-old, Boaz Myhill plays his football for Premier League outfit West Brom.

He's the second-choice goalkeeper and generally fills in for Ben Foster when he's unavailable through injury or suspension.

RB: Stephen Carr

Now retired, Stephen Carr is part of a company that owns a number of bars and nightclubs in popular celebrity destination Marbella.

Whilst he's not in the game right now, he will fondly be remembered down at St Andrews for his tenacious attitude and his decision to come out of retirement when he was offered a contract back in 2008.

He prolonged his St Andrews career for another five years, before leaving in the 2012-2013 season.

CB: Steven Caldwell

Another former player who is now retired, popular Scottish defender Steven Caldwell is now working as an analyst for leading Canadian Sports provider TSN.

His last playing club was Toronto FC, which led him to stay in Canada to promote the ongoing development of the game there.

CB: Curtis Davies

One of the players from that team to go on and have widespread success in the game, Curtis Davies is now at Hull City and is doing well.

He was always popular with the Blues faithful and out of many in this squad, you could always tell the former Villa man was one who could have gone on to play at a higher level.

LB: David Murphy

Birmingham City v Hull City - npower Football League Championship

Arguably one of the most unlucky players to have ever played for the club, David Murphy was superb during his time at St Andrews, despite his career always being plagued by injuries.

As a result of his inability to sustain fitness, he retired just two days after his 30th birthday and hasn't ventured back into the game since.

RM: Chris Burke

One of the most popular modern-day players to have ever graced the St Andrews turf, winger Chris Burke had arguably some of his finest games whilst playing for Birmingham City.

He was a big part of this Europa League side that narrowly missed out on progressing through the group stages. He's now with Scottish Premier League side Ross County, where he's on a deal until the end of the season.

CM: Jonathan Spector

Playing in just his second game for the club, former West Ham and Manchester United man Jonathan Spector started in central-midfield for Birmingham City that day.

Of course, he's the only player to still be at the club and he's ever-present in at right-back under Gary Rowett.

CM: Jean Beausejour

After a man-of-the-match performance in the first keg against Nacional, Jean Beausejour returned to the side for the second leg and once again, played very well indeed.

He's now back playing in his native homeland for Universidad de Chile, after spells in England with the Blues and Wigan Athletic.

LM: Nathan Redmond

For many Birmingham City fans, this is the game when Nathan Redmond really exploded onto the first-team scene.

He scored a fantastic long-range drive to put his side 1-0 up on the night and from there, his career has come on leaps and bounds.

Of course, he's now with Southampton and people are beginning to suggest a national team call-up isn't too far away in the slightest.

ST: Adam Rooney

Whilst his time at St Andrews wasn't particularly fruitful, you've got to give Adam Rooney plenty of credit for the way he helped Blues on their Europa League journey.

He scored the winner against Maribor in the group stages and was a really hard worker upfront. But his stint in the Midlands ended after just two seasons and he's now at Aberdeen in the SPL.

ST: Chris Wood

Appearing at just 19-years-old, Chris Wood was one of the real successes to come out of Birmingham's Europa League campaign.

As well as the vital goal he scored against Nacional, he also netted the memorable winner against Club Brugge in Belgium.

He's now at Leeds United, doing very well as the Whites look to keep pace at the top of the Championship.
