Over the years, earning promotion to, and staying, in the Premier League has become something of a Holy Grail for clubs in the Championship. There’s good reason for this too; with Aston Villa’s recent play-off win over Derby County thought to be worth a staggering £170 million over the course of just three seasons.

This issue is that staying in the Premier League represents a significant challenge for newly-promoted clubs, particularly given the competitive nature of the division and the financial resources available to other sides who have already established themselves in England’s top tier.

However, the statistics suggest that staying in the EPL may not be daunting as you might think.  In fact, there have been instances where all three promoted sides have retained their Premier League status.

But when did this happen last, and how regularly has it occurred in the EPL?

When was the Last Time all Three Promoted Sides Stayed Up?

Interestingly, the phenomenon of all three newly-promoted sides retaining their place in the top-flight last occurred at the end of the 2017/18 season, when Newcastle United, Brighton and Huddersfield all stayed up with varying degrees of comfort.

Ultimately, Rafa Benitez’ Magpies finished in 10th place and an impressive 11 points clear of the relegation zone, whilst Brighton ended the season seven points clear of 18th placed Swansea.

Finally, Huddersfield secured their safety with a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on the penultimate matchday of the season, finishing four points clear of the relegation zone.

Of course, Huddersfield ultimately lost their EPL place after a disappointing 2018/19 season, finishing bottom of the table with just 16 points from 38 games. However, both Newcastle and Brighton have kept their top-flight status for another year-with the Magpies even securing an additional point and improving on their performance from the previous season.

How Frequently have all Three Sides Stayed Up?

These performances suggest that promoted teams have benefited considerably from the increased financial rewards of reaching the promised land of the Premier League, and there’s no doubt that Norwich City, Sheffield United and Aston Villa will be hoping that the feat achieved in the 17/18 campaign will be repeated.

In light of the fact that newly promoted clubs are faring better than they have done in the past, if you regularly wager on the weekend’s action then the new season provides a good opportunity to make a bit of risk-free profit through matched betting. Essentially matched betting works by laying different outcomes, essentially ensuring that you can’t lose. If you check out matched betting sites like free oddsmonkey you’ll be able to find out more, so do your research and you will be in line to earn some handsome returns next term.

Aside from 2018, there are also two other occasions where all three promoted clubs remained in the Premier League. The first of these occurred during the 2001/02 season, when Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers all survived the dreaded threat of relegation.

It also happened exactly 10 years later at the end of the 2011/12 season, when QPR, Norwich City and Swansea all retained their Prem status. Norwich will definitely be hoping to repeat this achievement next season, as they look to avoid joining the 33 promoted clubs that have been relegated the first year after making it to the Premier League.

Have all Three Sides ever been Relegated?

One thing that’s definitely unlikely is that all three newly-promoted sides will be relegated, as this has happened only once since the formation of the Premier League in 1992.

This occurred at the end of the 1997/98 campaign, when Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley and Crystal Palace all lost their top-flight place after a tight and keenly-contested season.
