Stevenage midfiedler Chris Whelpdale says he is delighted to score the winner in a 1-0 win against Hartlepool.
The 27-year-old’s second half goal secured the win but Stevenage could have scored more as Hartlepool keeper Scott Flinders made three crucial saves.
“It’s always good to get three points on the first game of the season. It puts us in good stead for the season and we backed it up with a good performance,” said Whelpdale, speaking to the club’s official website.
The League Two side ended a nine-year curse where they have failed to win on opening day.
Describing his goal he said, “Adam (Marriott) got the ball out wide. There was a lot of space inside, I ran into that and he put me through. No one came to shut me down so I unleashed one!”
