Many Ipswich Town supporters have been relieved to see Paul Lambert’s comments ruling out the sale of defender Luke Woolfenden to Sheffield United for £3 million.

Woolfenden was again an important part of Lambert’s starting line-up for the Tractor Boys’ trip to Oxford United on Tuesday, starting alongside James Wilson and Luke Chambers in a back three and helping Ipswich record a vital clean sheet to earn a point in a goalless draw.

The defender’s performance against Oxford demonstrates how important he has become to Ipswich’s defence, with his maturity and composure when under pressure vital qualities for Lambert’s side, which has seen him help the Tractor Boys become one of most difficult teams to break down in League One this campaign.

Woolfenden’s form has unsurprisingly seen him be linked with moves to other teams this month, with Premier League Sheffield United the latest team to have shown reported interest in pursuing a £3 million move for the defender.

However, speaking to the media following Ipswich’s goalless draw at Oxford, Lambert was quick to rule out any sale for Woolfenden at that price tag, saying: "You can put another three in front of that and then I might think," he replied. "Three million?! Three million doesn't even buy you a flake! There's absolutely no chance whatsoever that would ever happen.

"The big lad is playing fantastically well, everybody knows it. Three million? No way. Put it this way, I won't let the same mistakes happen like happened with (Adam) Webster and the boy (Matt) Clarke, that's for sure.

"There's been no interest in any of our players as far as I know, but you can't stop people putting bids in for guys."

Ipswich supporters have welcomed those comments from Lambert, and believe the club should be doing all they can to hold onto one of their most important players, if they are going to go on and secure an immediate return to the Championship.
