It is fair to say that Peterborough United have garnered a bit of a reputation for signing relatively unknown strikers, and selling them on for millions of pounds.

That is exactly what they did with Jack Marriott this summer. Signed from Luton Town in June 2017, Marriott was an unknown quantity to many Peterborough fans.

He arrived at the Posh with a decent record for the Hatters but nothing spectacular, with eight goals in 39 appearances in League Two during the 2016/17 season.

But manager Grant McCann and chairman Darragh MacAnthony clearly saw enough in the striker for them to snap him up for the 2017/18 season.

This is FLW Rewind, where we look at an iconic decision in a club's recent history and take an in-depth look at the initial reaction and how things panned out.

The reaction from the London Road faithful was lukewarm at best, with many unimpressed at the unknown quantity's arrival.

With fellow new striker Ricky Miller suspended for the first six games, Marriott was thrown into the starting lineup a little earlier than expected.

Miller had just scored 40 goals in 41 games in the National League for Dover Athletic and was expected to be the Posh's main man, but after being found guilty of biting an opponent whilst with the non-league side, he would face a spell on the sidelines.

So up stepped Marriott, and his first month blue all the fans away.

Six goals in four games in August cemented his spot as the club's new first choice frontman and also secured the League One player of the month award.

Four more goals followed in September as the Posh remained right at the summit of the League One table and Marriott at the top of the scoring charts.

But October and November brought a lull for both player and club with just three goals in nine matches and just two wins.

Things looked set to get back on course in December with three straight wins over the Christmas period against Fleetwood Town, Bury and Bradford City with Marriott scoring in all three matches, taking his December tally to five in four.

Throughout 2018 the Posh's form spluttered and showed signs of life but inconsistencies and the sacking of McCann led to an end of their play-off ambitions.

But Marriott kept hitting the back of the net, taking his tally to 33 goals in all competitions and winning himself the golden boot and a big money move to Derby County for around £3million.

The latest in a long line of successful Posh strikers.
