Wigan Athletic starlet, Sean McGurk, is attracting the interest of Leeds United.

Leeds won the race to sign Joe Gelhardt from troubled Wigan in the summer, with the striker strengthening the under-23 side at Elland Road.

However, there was another Wigan youngster catching the eye at Elland Road in the form of midfielder, McGurk.

What's the latest?

With Gelhardt already through the door, Leeds were knocked back in their attempts to sign McGurk in the summer. Wigan's administrators rejected their approach for the midfielder.

However, as per The Sun, there will be a renewed attempt to sign McGurk from the Elland Road club in the January transfer window.

The 17-year-old would arrive at Leeds in a similar capacity to Gelhardt, strengthening Leeds' youth set-up following their promotion to a Category One academy.

Young midfielders such as Alfie McCalmont and Robbie Gotts have headed out on loan into the EFL on the back of Leeds' promotion, leaving scope for the Whites to add to their academy.

Reacting to the news that Leeds were chasing McGurk, Noel Whelan offered his thoughts to Football Insider.

He said: “At the minute the academy is looking really good. Category one gives us the option to go and buy players and play other sides in the category as well.

“This is what we need. Everything is being put in place at the football club with the younger generation and we’re spending a bit of money in that area.

“We’re still keeping the local lads coming through but sometimes you’ve got to dip into the market and that will make them better players, playing with better young talent as well.

“It looks really rosy at the minute and I’m sure we’ll be going in for more younger talent because that is the future of our club.”

It remains to be seen if Leeds can land the signing of McGurk in January, with the winter window now just two months away.
