When you consider just how impressive Blackburn Rovers have been in the Championship this season, it is hardly a surprise that some of their key players are attracting interest from elsewhere.

One of the individuals who has emerged as a target for Rangers and AFC Bournemouth during the current campaign is Joe Rothwell.

The midfielder has featured in all but one of Blackburn's league fixtures this season and is currently excelling under the guidance of manager Tony Mowbray.

Ahead of Rovers' clash with Luton Town this weekend, we have decided to take a closer look at Rothwell's situation at the club...

As per a report from the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn have now rejected a third bid from Bournemouth for Rothwell which was believed to be in the region of £2m.

It is understood that the Cherries have yet to match Rovers' valuation for the 27-year-old and thus Mowbray's side are holding firm.

However, according to a separate report from Lancs Live, Blackburn haven't ruled out the possibility of selling Rothwell if they receive an improved offer from Bournemouth.

Rangers meanwhile were initially linked with a move for Rothwell when Steven Gerrard was in charge of the club last year.

However, it remains to be seen whether their new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is willing to bolster his midfield options by signing the Blackburn man.

When you consider that Rothwell's contract is set to expire this summer, January represents the last chance that Blackburn will get to secure a fee for him as talks over a new deal have not progressed.

Yet with Rovers challenging for automatic promotion this season, it could be argued that selling one of their best players at this stage of the window will have a negative impact on their fortunes in the second-tier.

Rothwell has managed to provide 10 direct goal contributions in the Championship this season and is currently averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.11 which has only been bettered by three of his team-mates.

If the midfielder stays at Blackburn and is able to maintain his form as well as his fitness, he could go on to help his side secure a return to the Premier League later this year.
