Reading emerged as an interested party in Leeds United's Jamie Shackleton last week, as per Football Insider.

The 22-year-old has two years remaining on his deal at Elland Road and appears to be preparing for a Championship loan move in seeking more regular first team opportunities next term.

Shackleton is a versatile right sider, who can also play in central midfield, and was frequently involved for the Whites under Marcelo Bielsa.

The hardworking midfielder does not seem to be as high up the pecking order under Jesse Marsch, and therefore the priority for him in 2022/23 is to earn regular minutes.

The Royals' preparation for 2022/23 is going to be difficult with some financial constraints imposed on how they can operate in the summer window, and with his versatility Shackleton would offer a lot to Paul Ince.

Often loaning players to clubs that are expected to be battling against relegation can be decided against in fear of the experience negatively impacting the individual, however with the right attitude, and arguably a greater chance of standing out towards the bottom end of the division, a loan move to Reading could improve Shackleton's future prospects.

Joe Lumley and Dean Bouzanis have arrived at the Select Car Leasing Stadium this summer to bolster the club's goalkeeping department, with Junior Hoilett signing a new deal with the club earlier this week, but midfield areas are certainly looking light after the departures of Josh Laurent, Andy Rinomhota and Danny Drinkwater.

With the multitude of bases that Shackleton can cover he would be a marquee signing, even if only on loan, for Ince and Reading, as they look to instill a siege mentality in the group.
