Championship side Barnsley have placed Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on their shortlist as they seek to replace ex-boss Poya Asbaghi, according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon earlier this week.

The Dutchman returned to the Pirelli Stadium in January 2021 with the Brewers sitting bottom of League One at that point - but managed to turn things around as they ended up securing a 16th-placed finish, a remarkable position considering the amount of trouble they were in at the time of his arrival.

Unfortunately, he has been unable to guide his side to a much-improved finish this term, sitting in 14th at the end of the 2021/22 campaign with their form in the latter stages of this season letting them down.

Winning just two of his last 14 league games, this hasn't exactly given the 50-year-old a great deal of momentum going into next term, although he may not even be in the Midlands next season with reporter Nixon believing that the Tykes have him on their shortlist.

According to the same Patreon report from Nixon, Hasselbaink is "high on their hit list" and they would like the opportunity to speak to him ahead of a potential appointment, though no contact between the two clubs has been made officially public yet.

Following Johnnie Jackson's departure at The Valley, it was unclear whether Charlton Athletic would join the race for the 50-year-old's signature, but this has been ruled out by South London Press journalist Richard Cawley.

This could potentially provide a clear path for the Tykes to approach Burton's boss - and it doesn't look as though current caretaker manager Martin Devaney will be taking the permanent role at Oakwell at this stage after losing both of his games in charge.

There haven't been a flurry of names being linked with the vacancy in South Yorkshire just yet though, potentially indicating that CEO Khaled El-Ahmad and other officials at the club are in the early stages of their recruitment process.

With their season coming to an end this afternoon though with a visit to West Bromwich Albion, they won't want to take too long to appoint Asbaghi's successor with a busy transfer period to prepare for.
