Wigan Athletic have finally broken back into the Championship, having claimed the League One title at the end of the season.
Now, the work begins in trying to keep the team in the second tier for a prolonged spell and potentially push back on towards the Premier League. They are in a better position to do so now than before, with a new owner and manager Leam Richardson who has had plenty of success with the Latics so far.
In order to get the side ready for at least one season back in the Championship, the club might need to sort some of their squad out – and that will likely mean plenty of transfer rumours and news over the next few months.
Here then, are all the latest reports that you need to know about in regards to the DW Stadium club.
Quiz: Which club did Wigan Athletic sign these 24 players from in the 1990s?
James McClean commits to Wigan
Some good news for Wigan to start off the summer is that James McClean will stay on at the DW Stadium for at least another season – and that means he will be able to test himself at Championship level again. As their retained list was released, it was confirmed that he will stay on with the club.
The player has been exceptional for the club in League One, managing 33 games and 16 goal contributions during his time with the side so far. His impact under Leam Richardson has led to his contract extension option being triggered – and that means his future will be with the Latics.
However, one name who has been shown the door is Gavin Massey, who had nearly 150 league games for the team during his time there. Now though, the forward will be on the hunt for a new club.
Former player hits out at Latics
In news away from player departures and potential incomings, former player Josh Windass decided to take to Twitter to hit out at Wigan fans.
After some Latics supporters started to react to a deleted tweet of the player’s, he ended up hitting back at the club by suggesting that they couldn’t ‘fill their ground’ because of their lack of support.
Windass, like most of his career, managed plenty of goals and showed flashes of brilliance for the club during his time at the DW Stadium but was unable to keep fit. A falling out also led to him eventually leaving the side and he has since come up against them again with new side Sheffield Wednesday.
He won’t have done any favours now in terms of support from his former club after this fresh tweet.
Wigan bid for Bournemouth man too costly?
Wigan have been linked with a new signing already – but early reports of interest is Jamal Lowe have now been rubbished by The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.
He managed 34 games for the Cherries in the league last season but only nine of those appearances were starts. He returned seven goals and two assists, which wasn’t a bad output, but with the club now promoted it looks like he could be allowed to leave.
Having previously played for the club back when the side were relegated from the Championship, it would be a reunion for the player and the team in new circumstances.
However, it appears as though the potential money involved might rule a deal out for the winger – even if Wigan do have new owners and some new funds.
