What is the latest news and transfer rumours at Gillingham FC right now?

The Gillingham hierarchy are preparing for life in League Two for the first time in nine years following their relegation at the end of the 2021-22 season.

A mid-season switch of managers from Steve Evans to Neil Harris could not save the Kent club, who are now looking to rebuild under Harris and push for immediate promotion back to the third tier of English football.

Harris has cleared the decks of a lot of players at the Priestfield Stadium in the early weeks of the off-season, and clearly there is a lot of work to be done to transform the team.

Let’s look at the latest news and goings on at the Gills in the last week.

Gillingham are hopeful of keeping young defender Jack Tucker after offering him a new deal – but they appear to be fighting a losing battle.

The Gills will be entitled to compensation if centre-back Tucker does depart, and he could be set to secure a move back to League One – or even further up the pyramid.

Per Kent Online, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Scottish outfit Hibernian have all been noted as admirers of the 22-year-old, who looks poised for an exit after 44 appearances last season.

Harris hopeful of Thompson renewal

Neil Harris was able to land somewhat of a coup upon his arrival at Gillingham by bringing in former Millwall midfielder Ben Thompson.

Harris had coached the 26-year-old at the Lions in the past and played 17 times between his signing and the end of the season, scoring once.

Whilst he’s keen to keep the central midfield player around for next season, Harris has admitted that Thompson may be too good for the fourth tier.

“Thommo was on the retained list because legally we have to,” Harris told Gillingham’s official website.

“I spoke to him last week to see how he is getting on just in general.

“Ben knows, as a Football Club, we are huge fans and we would love Ben Thompson to be at the Football Club but he is a good player, as we know, and have to accept that he might play at a better level than League 2 next season.

“While there is a chance, I will always be hopeful just because of the relationship I have with him, but it’s a real long shot and we’ll have to see what happens.

McKenzie to depart

One player who is a confirmed departure is Robbie McKenzie, who has turned down a new deal at the Priestfield.

The 23-year-old joined in the summer of 2020 following his release from Hull City and he played 38 times in League One last season, scoring three times and providing three assists.

McKenzie is another player who Gills will be handed compensation for due to his age when he finds a new club, but it won’t be Coventry City, with local reports playing down the Sky Blues’ interest.

Chapman moves on to divisional rivals

Despite being offered a new deal by Gillingham, towering goalkeeper Aaron Chapman has decided to move on and rejoin former boss Steve Evans at Stevenage.

The 31-year-old played 18 times in League One last season and was Harris’ first-choice ahead of Watford loanee Pontus Dahlberg in-between the sticks.

However, he has opted not to remain at the Priestfield and instead linked up with Evans once again.
