Sunderland are the only unbeaten team left in League One and they're beginning to look like a side with one thing on their mind: automatic promotion.

The Black Cats are four points back from the top with a game in hand over the sides about them and will be hoping to climb up the table with games coming thick and fast over the next few weeks.

One man that will be hoping to contribute is striker Will Grigg, who has found himself sidelined recently.

A shin issue picked up in training meant he missed the EFL Trophy game against Carlisle United earlier this month but even before then he had seemingly fallen down the pecking order.

Phil Parkinson has preferred Charlie Wyke and Danny Graham to the Northern Irishman over the past few weeks, with the 29-year-old's last League One appearance coming on the 3rd of October.

Having been brought in for £4 million in January 2019 to replace Josh Maja, things haven't quite worked out for Grigg at the Stadium of Light yet but it seems he still has a role to play with the Black Cats this season.

Grigg still has two years left on his current and it is understood that MK Dons and Swindon Town were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign the Sunderland striker late in the summer window, which indicates the club see him in their plans moving forward.

With four fixtures over the next 12 days, rotation is likely to be key for Parkinson and that will likely mean the Northern Ireland international, who returned to the bench against Crewe in midweek, gets a chance to impress.

Before he moved to Sunderland, Grigg's scoring record in League One was outstanding. It would be a huge boost for the Black Cats if he could recapture that sort of form this season.
