Sheffield Wednesday and Jordan Rhodes haven't quite been the match made in heaven that everyone expected when he rocked up at Hillsborough in 2017.

Rhodes was seen as the man to make the play-off hopefuls, promotion certainties, and it just hasn't worked out.

In total, he's made 81 appearances for the Owls, scoring just 14 goals. He's even spent a season with Norwich City on loan, winning the Championship, but only contributing nine goals across all competitions.

He's been back at Hillsborough for two seasons now and is part of Garry Monk's first-team squad.

What is the current situation?

Rhodes is 30 now and is still battling to win over the doubters at Hillsborough.

He's been offered something of a lifeline by Monk this season and has been regularly involved in the matchday squads.

Wednesday lost the likes of Steven Fletcher and Atdhe Nuhiu in the off-season, so retaining Rhodes and adding more players around him was essential over the summer transfer window.

Rhodes started the season in excellent form, poaching a goal from inside the six-yard box in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Cardiff City on the opening day of the campaign. That was followed up by another start the week after against Watford, but since that goalless draw, the striker hasn't started for Wednesday.

He's featured from the bench and has seven appearances under his belt, but some late summer transfers have certainly pushed him down the pecking order.

Josh Windass' versatility means he always features somewhere in the attack, but Jack Marriott and Callum Paterson have arrived from Derby and Cardiff respectively. They led the line in Tuesday night's defeat to Brentford, with the latter even scoring.

For Rhodes, it was a 20-minute cameo from the bench as Wednesday looked for a route back into a game they lost 2-1.

You feel that supporting role will be Rhodes' moving forwards. He's not completely out of the picture at Wednesday, but Monk has signed players to play ahead of him over the summer.

Nevertheless, underneath the surface still lies the goalscorer that Wednesday signed. He's not going to be the man to win them promotion this season, but he might chip in with a few goals at the other end of the table, which could be equally as important.
