What is the current situation with Derby County and Reading as points deductions loom?

Both Derby County and Reading have been left reeling after the news emerged that both of the Sky Bet Championship clubs could be set to be hit with points deductions.

The impending deductions stem from both of the clubs’ various problems with financial mismanagement and unfortunately for the supporters of both the Rams and the Royals it appears that their sides are set to pay the price for bending the rules in the view of the Football League.

Here, we break down the details and examine just exactly what could be in store for these two clubs as their respective punishments loom large on the horizon.

The Rams are currently in line to be docked a total of 12 points, which would see them sink to the bottom of the Championship standings as a result.

Derby previously announced on Friday that the club would be going into administration, which means that their long term future as an organisation is in great doubt at present.

It is expected that the appointment of the administrators to oversee the process will be published today.

In addition to the initial points deduction of 12 that will be inflicted upon the club, the Rams also have the potential to be docked a further nine as part of their ongoing dispute with the EFL over breaking financial rules.

Reading

Meanwhile for the Royals, the Berkshire side are set to be deducted six to nine points as a result of also breaching the EFL’s strict financial rules, which means that Veljko Paunović’s side could too be plunged into a relegation battle.

The club have picked up 10 points in the league so far this season and will be set to fall down the standings if this punishment is, as expected, implicated.

It all stems from back in July when it was announced that the club had broken the Football League’s profit and sustainability rules, which saw the Royals end up being hit with a transfer embargo which limited them to signing free agents and loan players.

Reading are said to have made a loss of triple the £39 million guideline limit, which as a result is set to see them pay the price.
