Birmingham City have had several transfers that just didn't work out over the years and Kerim Frei certainly falls into that category.

Brought to St. Andrew's in January 2017 from Turkish giants Besiktas, the attacking midfielder would last just six months in Birmingham before sealing a transfer to Istanbul Basaksehir.

That was frustrating for Blues fans as they could see Frei had ability but he wasn't consistent enough and with off-field issues once again dominating the club, a swift exit was arranged.

And, Frei remains an Istanbul Basaksehir player to this day, although he has struggled to make an impact for the team that recently beat Manchester United in the Champions League.

After featuring regularly the season following his move back to Turkey, Frei, who is only 26, has spent the past few years way down the pecking order.

As a result, he went to Maccabi Haifa on loan for a spell in 2019 before spending the second part of last season with Dutch top-flight side FC Emmen before the Eredivisie was halted.

That meant Frei was back in Istanbul for this season and he was given a chance, featuring at some point in the first four games.

However, with the team failing to win one of those, changes were made and the ex-Fulham man now hasn't been out on the pitch since early October. To make matters worse, he has failed to make the matchday squad for four of those seven subsequent games.

So, it already seems as though a January switch could be on the cards and with his contract expiring at the end of this season, the player will have some big decisions to make.

Frei must surely now look to kickstart his career at a club where he will play regularly to try and fulfil his undoubted potential.
