Derby County have spent large parts of the last decade flirting with the Premier League.

The Rams have been the nearly men of the EFL. Always in the mix for promotion, but never quite getting back to the big time.

Because of that, a number of players have passed through the door at Pride Park. Amongst those was Scottish winger, Johnny Russell, who made 203 appearances for Derby and scored 34 goals between 2013 and 2018.

Derby County quiz: Can you name the club’s top goalscorer from the last 13 seasons?

Russell helped Derby to the play-off final in 2013/14 and then into the play-offs in 2015/16. Ultimately, he couldn't help the Rams back to the Premier League.

In January 2018, he made the move to the MLS, where he linked up with Kansas City.

Now 30, Russell has continued to excel as a goalscoring winger, with his reputation in the MLS growing over the course of a three-year period.

Russell made 34 appearances in his debut season in the States, scoring 10 goals and registering a further seven assists for Kansas, helping his side top the Western Conference. They were eventually beaten by Portland Timbers in the Conference Finals.

The following season there were nine more goals and six assists, with Kansas this time dropping off and finishing 11th in the Western Conference.

They have returned strongly in the disrupted 2020 campaign, though, moving into second in the Western Conference on Points Per Game. For Russell, he scored six goals and registered three assists in 22 outings.

Just like at Derby, he's proving to be a reliable source of goals for a hugely competitive side.
