What does the future hold for Rodrigo Ely at Nottingham Forest?

Rodrigo Ely’s move to Nottingham Forest hasn’t gone to plan so far for the Brazilian defender.

The centre back arrived at the City Ground as a free agent during the summer and was looking to live up to his billing as a technical defender who previously turned out for the likes of AC Milan and Deportivo Alavés earlier in his career.

However the 27-year-old is yet to have even made one single appearances for the Reds so far and just recently has suffered yet another setback in his recovery from injury.

The defender was due to feature for the club’s under-23 side as he looked to build up his match fitness, however Steve Cooper has now revealed that this will no longer be the case.

Speaking recently on the centre back’s situation, Cooper stated the following:

“He was due to play for the under-23s tonight, but he’s now not available. He’s having to have a scan on a muscle injury, so we’ll find out how long he will be out for.

“I wouldn’t say it’s serious, as in long-term. But he does need to have a scan on his quad.”

After recovering from an initial long term problem, Ely has also sustained a quad injury, followed by an ankle knock.

His future at present remains uncertain at the City Ground until he can prove he is fit to play, with his current contract only running to the summer of next year.

The challenge for the Brazilian now is to get back to full fitness and prove to Cooper that he can be a valuable member of a squad that is in great need of defensive reinforcements.

There is certainly still a window of opportunity for him to feature in what is becoming a congested campaign for the Reds and that is something that he shouldn’t lose sight of.

Cooper has made it clear that almost every player has been given a clean slate since he got the job, so it is up to Ely to show that he deserves a longer term contract with Forest.
