Huddersfield Town have been winning on and off the pitch over the last couple of months.

Carlos Corberan has launched an embryonic push for the Championship play-offs in 2021/22, and there's a certain intrigue as to whether Huddersfield can continue to pick up enough wins to maintain this lofty position.

Off-field, too, the club can give themselves a pat on the back.

Leeds United came knocking for their star man, Lewis O'Brien, during the summer transfer window. Phil Hodgkinson detailed how Town knocked back a package of £13m for the service of the midfielder, deeming the structure of it not quite right for their academy graduate.

O'Brien has since committed to an improved deal at Huddersfield, taken on responsibility with the vice-captaincy and continued to be the heartbeat of Corberan's side in the Championship.

Harry Toffolo spoke last week of how he feels his Huddersfield teammate can go all the way to the top, underlining how Corberan is improving him day-to-day.

Eventually, O'Brien will take the step up to the Premier League. The top and bottom of what his future holds is that he will be a top-flight player before long.

It's just a matter of whether Huddersfield can take him there and capitalise on a clear improvement under Corberan, or if a club comes knocking like Leeds did and offers a suitable package.

Huddersfield are like 95% of the Championship in that they cannot stand in the way of a player if the finances are right and a Premier League opportunity arises. That isn't going to change despite O'Brien's new deal at the club. All it does is secure Huddersfield's asset and make it easy to knock back approaches like we saw from Elland Road.

Fending off Leeds' interest was an off-field win for Huddersfield and retaining O'Brien increases their chance of more wins in the Championship.

That's the short-term, though, with the long-term surely resting on whether or not Huddersfield can covert 25 points from 16 games into another unlikely promotion.

As Toffolo underlined, it's only a matter of time before O'Brien becomes a top-flight player.
