Sheffield Wednesday are going through a difficult period.

After being handed a points deduction for breaching spending rules the club are fighting against the tide the pull themselves away from the relegation battle.

Dejphon Chansiri has aspirations much higher than merely avoiding the drop, but in the context of the season it's important that the club learn to walk before they can run.

Of course this hasn't always been the case.

The Owls have a history of spending substantial sums on new players - something that I'm sure they'll hope to be able to do again in the future.

But who are Sheffield Wednesday's record signings, and what are they doing now? Let's take a look at the figures given by Transfermarkt.

8. Andy Booth - £3.51m

After signing in 1996 the striker spent almost five years at Hillsborough.

He then enjoyed an eight-year stay with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town before hanging up his boots.

Booth now works for the Terriers as an ambassador and is regularly featured in the media as a column writer.

7. Gary Hooper - £3.51m

The striker moved to Sheffield initially on a loan deal from Norwich City before making his move permanent.

He then spent two-and-a-half years at Hillsborough before being released at the end of the 2018-19 season, before enjoying spells with Wellington Phoenix and Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters where he currently plays.

6. Fernando Forestieri - £3.71m

After impressing during a two-year spell with Watford Sheffield Wednesday made a move to sign the Argentina-born forward in 2015.

Spending five years at Hillsborough the exciting star established himself as a real fans' favourite before choosing to leave the club in the summer of 2020.

Forestieri now plays for Udinese in Serie A.

5. Andy Hinchcliffe - £4.05m

After spending 12 years as a player with Manchester City and Everton the defender made the move to Hillsborough in 1998.

He spent four years with the club before retiring from the game in March 2002.

Since then Hinchcliffe has become a major player in the media world and is regularly seen on Sky Sports as a pundit and co-commentator.

4. Darko Kovacevic - £4.5m

Big transfer fees don't always pay off and this was a prime example of that.

Kovacevic joined the club in 1995 after establishing himself as a top player for Red Star Belgrade but things simply didn't work out for him at Hillsborough.

That said, he did enjoy spells with the likes of Real Sociedad, Juventus and Lazio before moving into the role of scout and sporting director for both Olympiacos and the Serbian national team.

3. Gilles De Bilde - £4.5m

After impressing with Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven the striker made the move to Hillsborough.

He enjoyed two seasons with the club but was unable to stave off relegation in the first, leading to a mixed campaign in his second.

Since then De Bilde has established himself as a football pundit and a model.

2. Adam Reach - £5.31m

After coming through the ranks with Middlesbrough the midfielder made a move to Sheffield Wednesday in 2016.

Since then he's established himself as one of the club's most reliable players season in, season out.

Still with the club now, Reach will hope to be a key part of the project that the Owls are building under Tony Pulis.

1. Jordan Rhodes - £10.53m

The Owls' record signing.

The striker arrived from Middlesbrough for a huge fee but has simply failed to meet the expectations that came with the pricetag.

Rhodes is out of contract at the end of the season and at the moment it seems inevitable that he'll move on.
