Barnsley will be seeking to build on their recent positive showings in the Championship over the coming weeks as Valérien Ismaël continues to put his own stamp on proceedings at Oakwell after taking over the reins from Gerhard Struber.

With games to come against the likes of Brentford, Blackburn and Birmingham, the Tykes will be well aware of the importance of racking up the points as we enter what is a traditionally hectic winter period, with fixture congestion sure to put the squad under immense strain.

To take people's minds of the current rat race in the Championship, we have devised a list of Barnsley's EIGHT most expensive signings with the help of Transfermarkt and taken a look at what they are up to nowadays...

Having joined back in August 2019, the Austrian is still on the books at Barnsley and is no doubt seeking to make an impression under the club's newly installed manager in the weeks ahead. The 22-year-old currently has just two league starts to his name this term.

Another arrival from the summer of 2019, Thomas is a tricky winger who is still very much making his way in the game at the age of 21 and will be seeking to build on the 39 appearances that he made for the Tykes last season. The former Derby County man racked up one goal and four assists in the previous campaign.

Now playing at National League level for Notts County, the tenacious Scotsman is seeking to get a promotion onto his CV with Neal Ardley's men before he hangs up his boots. Now aged 33, the midfielder made over 130 appearances for Barnsley during a four year spell with the Tykes.

One of the club's most recent and expensive additions, Kane will be seeking to make a strong impact for his new club this term after spending much of his career to date out on loan and in Liverpool's under-23s set up. This is Kane's second season in succession as a Championship player after forming part of the Hull City side that was relegated to League One.

Now retired after hanging up his boots back in 2014, Gray is best known for his powerful displays up front for the Tykes, with the towering former striker having notched 21 goals in just under 100 games during his time at Oakwell before departing for Leeds United in 2012.

The veteran forward is currently a free agent after leaving FC Pune City and has taken in spells in countries such as India and Spain since leaving Barnsley back in 2011 after making just north of 50 appearances for the Tykes, notching just nine goals in the process.

Ward retired back in 2005 after a career that spanned the best part of 10 years at various clubs including Norwich and Sheffield United. After signing for Barnsley back in the 1997/98 season, the striker went on to notch nine goals in just over 30 games for the Tykes before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in the following campaign.

Still Barnsley's record arrival despite retiring back in 2010, Hristov spent just one full season with the club in what was a particularly unmemorable spell for the North Macedonian international as he only found the net on four occasions for the club during the Premier League season of 1997/98 before departing to NEC Nijmegen of the Eredivisie in the following campaign.
