Portsmouth continued their defence of the Leasing.com trophy last night with a 2-1 win away at Walsall, which saw them progress to the quarter-final stage.

John Marquis slammed home from a corner after Christian Burgess had nodded a Gareth Evans delivery back across goal, before Ellis Harrison met an excellent cross from Steve Seddon late on to power in a header.

Walsall did pull one back through Caolan Lavery after Rory Holden had been fouled by Paul Downing inside the area, but the visitors held on for a crucial cup progression.

One standout performance in a Portsmouth shirt came from striker Oli Hawkins, who was making just his ninth appearance of the campaign.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, the striker did well when he was largely alone up front as Marquis chose to drop deep to receive the ball, and Hawkins was able to hold the ball up against two physical centre-backs until he waited for support.

Having signed for the club  in 2017 from Dagenham & Redbridge, the 27-year-old has divided opinion from the Portsmouth supporters, but he put in a promising performance away to Walsall.
