Portsmouth continued their defence of the Leasing.com trophy last night with a 2-1 win away at Walsall, which saw them progress to the quarter-final stage.
John Marquis slammed home from a corner after Christian Burgess had nodded a Gareth Evans delivery back across goal, before Ellis Harrison met an excellent cross from Steve Seddon late on to power in a header.
Walsall did pull one back through Caolan Lavery after Rory Holden had been fouled by Paul Downing inside the area, but the visitors held on for a crucial cup progression.
One standout performance in a Portsmouth shirt came from striker Oli Hawkins, who was making just his ninth appearance of the campaign.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, the striker did well when he was largely alone up front as Marquis chose to drop deep to receive the ball, and Hawkins was able to hold the ball up against two physical centre-backs until he waited for support.
Having signed for the club in 2017 from Dagenham & Redbridge, the 27-year-old has divided opinion from the Portsmouth supporters, but he put in a promising performance away to Walsall.
Here, we take a look at the best reaction from Portsmouth fans in regards to Hawkins’ performance…
Oli Hawkins MOTM tonight by a country mile 👏

For a player that is constantly criticised and wrongly in my opinion, what a performance from Oli Hawkins tonight. MOTM for me all day long. Won every header and was a menace for Walsall’s back line. Almost bagged himself a goal too!! #pompey

KJ’s biggest mistake this season not pairing him with Marquis for sure.

Yes, especially that lovely through ball for Marquis who hit straight into the keepers arms. 😡

He was such an unsung hero for Lowe and Curtis’s numbers last season. No coincidence we dropped off when he was dropped!

Not going to mention the chances Hawkins missed either?
