As January rolled around in the 2017/18 season, Barnsley found themselves in a precarious position in the Championship.

Big question marks still loomed over manager Jose Morais as the Tykes slumped towards the bottom of the table and into what was an incredibly tightly contested relegation battle.

Sunderland, Burton Albion, Bolton Wanderers, Reading and Birmingham City, as well as the Morais' side, were all well at risk of dropping into the third tier.

A positive January transfer window was needed and that is what they got.

Oli McBurnie, Kieffer Moore, Connor Mahoney and Matt Mills as the club looked to strengthen in all areas of the pitch.

Thanks to a new contract agreement, however, there was one area of the pitch they need not worry about.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

That area was in goal, as Adam Davies put together any speculation of leaving the club by putting pen to paper on a new 18-month deal.

The Welshman had been the club's most consistent performer over the course of the season and losing him would have been a huge blow to their survival hopes.

It was a fact not lost on the fans either, who could not hide their delight at the news:

Unfortunately, despite the positive window, things failed to improve for the Tykes and they were relegated on the final day of the season thanks to a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

But, under new manager Daniel Stendel, the club have refound their form and currently sit fifth in the League One table with a real chance of promotion back to the second-tier.

With Davies now the club's captain, he is arguably more important than ever. But a problem may not be far away.

That contract that the 26-year-old signed is now set to run-out at the end of the current season which could signal plenty of January interest.

With the rival prospect of losing him for nothing at the end of the season, the Tykes may be tempted to cash-in on him as well.

It is safe to say that these fans may have been a bit hasty in their celebrations.
