Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a major boost - with experienced goalkeeper Keiren Westwood set to be available for selection for their weekend clash with Preston, according to Yorkshire Live.

The 36-year-old wasn't included in Wednesday's 25-man Championship squad, submitted by Garry Monk, and therefore wasn't going to be able to feature in the league until January.

However, the Owls have been in talks with the EFL in recent days, and Yorkshire Live believe that Westwood has been granted permission to play before then, and could even be in contention for this weekend's game against Alex Neil's side.

Quiz: Did these 17 Sheffield Wednesday players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Westwood's last appearance came at West Brom 12 months ago, and was completely frozen out by Monk, having not been given a squad number and was even forced to train with the club's U23s.

However, the experienced-shotstopper returned to first-team training in Tony Pulis' first day as Wednesday boss on Monday - with the former Middlesbrough manager describing Westwood as "one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship".

Westwood has always been a popular figure with the Hillsborough faithful, and Owls supporters have taken to Twitter to express their delight at him being back in the first-team picture.
