West Ham have signed their second goalkeeper of the summer, after the club confirmed that David Martin has joined from Championship side Millwall.

The 33-year-old 'keeper has joined the club on a two year deal, with the option of extending that by a further 12 months.

Martin made just 15 appearances in all competitions in his two years at Millwall, having joined from MK Dons in the summer of 2017, and speaking to his new side's official website, he said: “Signing for West Ham United is a dream, both for me and my family.

“I’ve grown up around West Ham and to come to my boyhood club is a dream."

Martin's dad, Alvin, is a club legend at West Ham, having made just under 600 appearances for the club in a 20 year spell between 1976 and 1996, and speaking about his memories of watching his dad play for The Hammers, Martin junior added: “I came to games as a kid as one of the supporters in the stands at the Boleyn Ground. I loved watching my Dad play, and I’ve continued coming to games throughout my career."

The signing of Martin may signal an end to West Ham's dealings in the goalkeeper department for the summer. On Friday, the club announced the signing of 33-year-old stopper Roberto from Spanish side Espanyol, two days after it was confirmed that long serving 'keeper Adrian will leave the club in the summer following the expiration of his contract.

The verdict

With Lukasz Fabianski remaining a well established number one at West Ham, it is hard to see Martin getting a huge amount of game time with The Hammers.

You can't blame him for making this move even so, given that he wasn't exactly a regular at Millwall either, and this should at least be a more lucrative move for Martin.
