Ricardo Vaz Tê wrote his name into West Ham United folklore and EFL history when he fired the ball into the roof of the net from close range in the 2011/12 Championship play-off final to clinch the Hammers' return to the Premier League.

The forward's late strike against Blackpool ensured that the east London club bounced back up to the top flight at the first time of asking after their promotion in 2010/11 – though admittedly by missing out on the top two and going up through the play-offs, they did it the hard way.

The Hammers' Wembley hero hadn't been at the club when they dropped out of the Premier League a year earlier but proved to be surely one of their greatest January signings having been brought in from Championship rivals Barnsley on deadline day.

Vaz Tê scored 12 goals in 18 appearances in 2011/12, including two during their play-off run, and though things never really clicked for him in the top flight, he remains a popular figure among the London Stadium faithful.

Opportunities were hard to come in the final few years of his West Ham tenure and in 2015 his contract was terminated, leaving him free to join Akhisar Belediyespor, who were a Turkish Super Lig team at the time, on a six-month deal.

The Portuguese forward would be back in English football not long after, however, though an ill-fated spell at Charlton Athletic was cut short in February 2016.

He returned to Akhisar Belediyespor for another brief but fruitful spell, finishing with 31 goals in 70 appearances for the club in total, before sealing a move to the Chinese Super League in July 2017 with Henan Songshan Longmen.

Vaz Tê bagged 16 goals in 26 games for Henan before sealing a move to Qingdao FC in February 2019 and less than a year later returned to his homeland.

The forward signed for Portuguese top division side Portimonense in January 2020 but after two goals in 22 appearances, was released last summer.

Now 35, the West Ham play-off final hero is currently a free agent and told the Hammers club website in September 2021 that he wasn't feeling his age and had another season in him.

It remains to be seen whether he'll get a chance for a swansong before hanging up his boots.
