Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson wants to stay down south, putting Fulham into pole position to sign him ahead of Burnley, The Sun reports.

Mawson's geographical preference will also be of interest to West Ham United, who have been linked with a move for the defender this summer.

The England hopeful wants to move to a Premier League club to boost his international ambitions with Fulham, Burnley and West Ham among the teams keen on him.

The 24-year-old has played 71 games for Swansea since his 2016 switch from Barnsley, establishing himself as one of the most consistent performers for the Welsh club.

Fulham are seemingly in pole position to sign Mawson and bolster their centre-back options but his price tag of £25m is putting them off a bit.

West Ham have signed Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop at centre-half this summer so they might not be interested, while Burnley need more faces for their Europa League campaign.

The Verdict

£25m is a huge fee to pay for a defender who was part of a relegated team.

But perhaps Mawson could be worth the long-term investment - it would be a gamble though.

If you look at Harry Maguire, Leicester City got a bargain last season and it could be a similar case with Mawson.
