Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to re-sign West Ham midfielder Josh Cullen on loan, Football Insider have reported.

Cullen enjoyed a successful loan spell at Charlton last season, making 32 appearances and scoring once to help the Addicks win promotion back to the Championships via the League One play-offs.

Now, it looks as though the 23-year-old is set for a return to The Valley for the coming campaign, with Charlton boss Lee Bowyer's reported summer-long pursuit of Cullen seemingly set to come to fruition.

If confirmed, Cullen is set to become Charlton's ninth signing of the transfer window, although he won't be the first familiar face to make a return to the club this summer.

Ben Purrington and Jonny Williams have both already rejoined the club following the part they played in the Addicks' promotion last season, while Chuks Aneke, Macauley Bonne, Ben Amos, Deji Oshilaja and Tom Lockyer have all made permanent moves to The Valley, with Conor Gallagher joining on loan from Chelsea.

A graduate of West Ham's academy system, Cullen has made nine appearances in all competitions for the Hammers' first-team, and is entering the final season of his contract with the club.

The Verdict

This will be a big boost for Charlton.

With numbers looking slightly short in midfield, they could still do with adding some options in the centre of the park, and Cullen seems like the perfect man for that role.

Charlton already know about Cullen's vast ability, and the fact that he already knows the club, manager and squad means that it should be relatively easy for the player himself to settle back in at the club.

For those reasons it seems as though this is a move that suits Cullen as well, and the likelihood of regular football means that he will be given plenty of opportunities to prove he is worthy of a new deal when his current one with West Ham expires at the end of the season, be that with the Hammers or somewhere else.
