West Ham and Middlesbrough have held early talks with Josh Maja's representatives over a potential deal for the in-form striker according to the Sunderland Echo.

It will come as no surprise to see Maja being linked with a move away from Sunderland, as he has played a starring role in their promotion push this season.

The 19-year-old has 16 goals this season, and has been their man outlet for goals, as they target an immediate return to the Championship, following relegation last year.

Maja has also been attracting interest from Cardiff and Celtic, and his future surely lies away from the Stadium of Light after such an impressive start to the season.

But Jack Ross will be hoping that his star striker can stay with the club, and play a significant role in their revival, after a disappointing couple of seasons.

It's sure to be a nervous ten days for Sunderland, with the transfer window edging closer to being closed, and they will be praying that Maja is still at the club by the end of the month, so that he can fire them back into the Championship.

The Verdict:

"This could be a devastating blow for Sunderland's promotion hopes.

"Maja has been crucial for them this season, and without his goals, Sunderland wouldn't be in promotion contention, but they'll need to have his future resolved as quickly as possible.

"If they do decide to sell him quickly, then they could find a replacement for the promising youngster."
