West Brom are eyeing a move for Spanish striker Guillermo Fernandez Hierro, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 24-year old, known in his homeland simply as Guillermo, currently plays for Numancia in the Segunda Division. He bagged eleven goals for them in all competitions last season, including an eye-catching brace at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

He came through the ranks at Athletic Bilbao, leaving them after six years to join Elche in 2016. One season later he switched to his current club, following Elche's relegation.

Darren Moore is facing up to the possibility of losing Jay Rodriguez and Salomon Rondon this summer and sees Guillermo as a possible replacement for them if one, or indeed both of them depart.

West Brom are facing up to their first season in the Championship since 2010 following a terrible campaign last time around. Moore did improve fortunes, seeing them lose just one of their final six games prior to relegation.

The Verdict

This may be negative, but in Guillermo I see comparisons with Leeds United Caleb Ekuban. There's no indication that simply bringing in a lower level player from abroad is sufficient for a Championship play off assault.

Guillermo may be different, but West Brom fans will surely be hoping for someone a little more recognisable if they're to avoid a longer stay in the second tier.
