West Bromwich Albion eyeing move for 27-year-old

Sky Bet Championship side West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers, according to Daily Telegraph writer John Percy.

The Baggies have been busy in the transfer market this week, bringing in both Kenneth Zohore and Semi Ajayi from Cardiff City and Rotherham United respectively.

They have already strengthened their options in the middle of the park, too, with the addition of Filip Krovinovic on a season-long loan deal from Benfica – however Slaven Bilic is now set to turn his attention to Sawyers.

The 27-year-old has been a hugely important player for Brentford over the last few years, making over 130 appearances for the Bees since arriving from Walsall in 2016.

The midfielder has established himself as one of the best playmakers in the division during his time at Brentford, but can play slightly deeper if needs be.

Sawyers has one year left on his deal at Griffin Park, and according to Percy, it may cost around £3m to lure the Birmingham-born playmaker away from the West London club this summer.

Leeds United have also been linked with the signature of the Saint Kitts and Nevis international, but a deal could now be on the horizon for Albion.

The Verdict

I think that £3m would be an absolute bargain for a player of Sawyers’ quality, and he would be an excellent signing for the Baggies.

They really missed Harvey Barnes’ creativity and flair when he went back to Leicester City last season, and even though they have signed Krovinovic, they still need options in that area of the pitch.

Sawyers can create goals as well as track back with ease, and it would be a real coup for Bilic’s side if they were to land him this summer.
