West Brom will not be handing Greg Halford a contract despite the defender training with the Baggies to keep up his fitness levels.

Darren Moore has previously taken a similar look at Wes Hoolahan, Tyrone Mears and Bakary Sako, who have eventually been offered contracts at the Hawthorns.

Halford is the latest player to be training with the Baggies, but there doesn’t appear to be a West Brom future for the versatile 34-year-old.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the defender is only training with West Brom in order to keep his fitness levels high following his departure from Cardiff City last summer.

That spell in Cardiff brought promotion for Halford, who has plenty of experience.

He’s played for the likes of Wolves, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest across a lengthy career, filling in across the park and featuring in defence, midfield and even attack on occasions.

Moore seems unlikely to add Halford to his current crop at the Hawthorns, though, as West Brom go in search of promotion back to the Premier League.

West Brom currently find themselves on a five-match unbeaten run, but two draws in their last two outings has seen them fall behind in the race for automatic promotion.

The Verdict

Halford has a wealth of experience, which would be vital to some clubs, but he doesn’t seem to fit the profile of what West Brom are looking for.

Moore is still at the early stages of transforming his squad, and whilst he’s brought some free agents in, he doesn’t want to overcrowd the Hawthorns with bodies.

It’s got to be a case of quality over quantity from here.
